Tour Description:
Our tour starts with the Arnolfini Portrait, filled with hidden secrets, and then we make our way to Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin of the Rocks. After admiring Botticelli’s Venus and Mars we head over to the main gallery and check out Titian’s Bacchus and Ariadne.

Then it’s over to number five on our list, Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors, before assessing Caravaggio’s Boy Bitten by a Lizard. Diego Velasquez’s Rokeby Venus is number seven on our list, followed by Paul Delaroche’s The Execution of Lady Jane Grey. Then it’s time for our Impressionists – Monet’s Water Lilies, and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.

Our main attractions, we have the temperate house that is the largest surviving Victorian glass house in the world and it was recently restored in 2018 to its former glory - we often refer to it, or liken it to a cathedral of glass just because the scale and magnificence of the structure itself, but also inside it contains around 150 species of plants and a lot of those are endangered or threatened in the wild, so it's also important from a conservation perspective and as you tour the glass house you can also read up about what our scientists are doing to help protect those.

We also have the Palm House which is one of our more iconic glasshouses, which you'll probably recognise from various images of Kew and that contains, obviously, our tropical collection of plants many of which are imported from, again, a conservation or medicinal perspective and really, walking there transports you to the heart of the rainforest so it's a really incredible experience to have this close to central London. We also have some of the more natural beauty, the great broad walk borders - which is the longest double herbaceous border in the world, which looks absolutely stunning all the way from spring all the way to autumn and is full of beautiful scents and colours from all the planting there.

We also have The Hive, which came to us in 2016. It's a really beautiful structure which takes as a beehive as its inspiration and it is there to highlight the plight of the honeybee and how important it is to the future of the planet, surrounded by a beautiful wildflower meadow which is the ?? environment way with thriving populations of honeybees and it reacts to the motion of the bees within a hive contained in Kew. So the more active they are, the more it will vibrate and ??? come to life, so it's a lovely immersive experience.

We also have the great pagoda within the gardens, which was designed by Sir William Chambers and completed in 1762 and that's located next to our beautiful Japanese gardens, so it really is a very interesting place to visit. As you can see here, we also have the Kew explorer that does a circuit of the gardens in about 45 minutes and we take in all of the highlights with guided commentary, so you can discover a bit more of the gardens with leisure. There is something here for everyone, we have a whole series of events taking place within the gardens throughout the year - we are open everyday apart from the 24th and the 25th of December. For most of the 20th century, Londoners along the Thames River faced a high risk of floods. Storms like the 1953 North Sea Storm resulted in the deaths of hundreds and the displacement of thousands of people, and spurred discussions on how to protect London from future disasters.

By the 1980s, engineers introduced a solution: the Thames Barrier. This impressive structure comprises multiple moving metal gates that can halt water flow during potential flood events. Since its creation, London has successfully avoided costly storm-related death and destruction, inspiring other coastal cities to model their defense systems after the Thames Barrier.

But today’s changing climate and rising sea levels are challenging the integrity of London’s anti-flood walls. From 1980 to 1990, the barrier was closed only four times; from 2010 to 2020, the barrier was closed 50 times. It was never designed for such frequent use.

In response to evolving weather patterns, the UK government created the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan, a future-looking plan that monitors and adapts the metal gates in response to tide data. With each decade, the plan outlines potential upgrades to the existing barrier and the construction of additional flood defenses. The plan hopes to futureproof London, but whether or not the Thames Barrier will stand the test of time will also depend on how climate change reshapes the world.

10 gates made of hollow steel, up to 40 millimetres thick, divide the river into six navigable spans. The central four gates are 61 metres wide, standing at 20 metres high, at a sturdy weight of 3700 tonnes. The others measure around half the size at 30 metres wide. These are supported by massive piers that house a wealth of key machinery that are vital to the operation of the barrier.

All of this complex machinery was built to prevent another tragedy like the North Sea Flood of 1953. The disaster took the lives of 300 people, and caused around a billion pounds worth of damage in today's money. Without the Thames Barrier, London could very well be facing down another flood that would put the heart of the country in extreme danger.

At the time of its completion, its effective life expectancy was estimated to be anywhere between 2030 to 2070. But the world of today is not the world it was originally built for. With sea levels on the rise as the climate emergency grows, can the Thames Barrier still keep London safe?
